Support Viva!’s eating-out revolution, 50 For Our Planet!

Vegan charity Viva! is aiming to get 50 per cent of the dishes on restaurant menus to be plant-based. It’s a fantastic campaign; here’s a bit more about it and how you can get involved!

In the UK, on average, we eat out 1.5 times a week.

So, our nation’s restaurants have a hugely influential role in getting people talking about, celebrating, and choosing to eat more plants.

Research by vegan charity Viva’s 50 For Our Planet team found that 68 per cent of people feel it’s important that restaurants limit their impact on the planet through the food they serve.

For me, the simple solution – put more plants on plates!

To push towards this, Viva! has launched a sustainable eating-out campaign, which aims to get 50 per cent of the dishes on restaurant menus to be plant-based by 2025. Hence, the campaign handle, 50 For Our Planet!

Viva! is helping restaurants, of all sizes, to transition to 50 For Our Planet with support including advice and insights from industry leaders, renowned chefs and well-known plant-based food brands. Participating restaurants will also get a free Menu Impact Score from a leading carbon labelling company.

Viva! has chains like wagamama, Burger King and Ikea on board, and for these, and others, Viva! is running a leaderboard, to rank their progress. You can see the leaderboard on their website.

Viva! also needs us eaters to encourage more restaurants to add plant-based dishes to their menus, celebrate plant-based eating out and spread the 50 For Our Planet word!

There are various ways you can help make the 50 For Our Planet campaign a huge success; you can:

  • Ask Viva! to contact your favourite restaurant about how to get involved, by completing the form on Viva!’s website
  • Leave a positive Google review, asking your favourite restaurants to join the plant-based revolution by signing up to 50 For Our Planet
  • Order the 50 For Our Planet leaflet door-dropper pack and drop some leaflets around your neighbourhood to raise awareness of the campaign
  • Share this article
  • And my favourite; order a pack of Viva’s 50 For Our Planet cards on their website, and leave one at the next place you eat out, asking the restaurant to join the campaign

You can find Viva’s website here, where you’ll find the above resources and more about these ways you can help.

I love Viva’s 50 For Our Planet campaign, it involves a group of businesses – restaurants that can have an enormous impact on making our food system better for our health, our planet, and the lives of all its inhabitants.

It’s time for a dining revolution; let’s help Viva! make 50 For Our Planet a hugely successful campaign!
